在交换代数中， 深度是交换环与模的一种不变量，它可以由正则序列定义，或以同调代数中的Ext函子刻划。

正则序列

设 ${\displaystyle R}$ 为交换环，${\displaystyle M}$ 为 ${\displaystyle R}$-模。若元素 ${\displaystyle x\in R}$ 满足 ${\displaystyle \forall m\in M,\;xm=0\Rightarrow m=0}$（即：${\displaystyle x}$ 非 ${\displaystyle M}$ 的零因子），则称之为 ${\displaystyle M}$-正则元。

一组 M-正则序列是一个 ${\displaystyle R}$ 中的有限序列 ${\displaystyle (x_{1},\ldots ,x_{d})}$，使得对每个 ${\displaystyle 1\leq i\leq d}$ 有

${\displaystyle x_{i))$ 为 ${\displaystyle M/(x_{0},\ldots ,x_{i-1})}$-正则元（置 ${\displaystyle x_{0}:=0}$）

定理（Rees）：若 ${\displaystyle (R,{\mathfrak {m)))}$ 是局部诺特环，元素皆属于 ${\displaystyle {\mathfrak {m))}$ 的正则序列之置换仍是正则序列，而且这类序列中的极大者都具相同长度。

深度

假设同上，并固定一个理想 ${\displaystyle I\subset R}$。定义${\displaystyle R}$-模 ${\displaystyle M}$ 的I-深度为元素皆属于 ${\displaystyle I}$ 的 ${\displaystyle M}$-正则序列的最大长度，记作 ${\displaystyle \mathrm {depth} _{I}(M)}$（在法文文献中常记作 ${\displaystyle \mathrm {prof} _{I}(M)}$）。环 ${\displaystyle R}$ 的 ${\displaystyle I}$-深度定义为 ${\displaystyle \mathrm {depth} _{I}(R)}$。

${\displaystyle \mathrm {depth} _{I}(M)}$ 亦可用Ext函子刻划为使得 ${\displaystyle \mathrm {Ext} ^{n}(R/I,M)\neq 0}$ 的最小非负整数 ${\displaystyle n}$。

下列等式将深度问题化约到局部环的情形：

${\displaystyle \mathrm {depth} _{I}(M)=\sup _((\mathfrak {p))\supset I}(M_{\mathfrak {p)))}$

以下定理揭示了深度与射影维度的关系。

定理 （Auslander-Buchsbaum）：设 ${\displaystyle A}$ 为局部诺特环，${\displaystyle M}$ 为有限生成 ${\displaystyle A}$-模，而且其射影维度有限，则

${\displaystyle \mathrm {pd} _{A}(M)+\mathrm {depth} _{A}(M)=\mathrm {depth} (A)}$
