背景
在558年，库思老一世与突厥联手击败嚈哒。然而两国关系很快变坏，突厥人580年及588年两次入侵帝国。
巴赫拉姆·楚宾被选为将领带领军队对付他们，他的军队12000人在588年伏击了一支庞大的突厥军队。在589年收回巴尔赫。接着他越过阿姆河并成功地击退突厥入侵和接管前嚈哒领土。
