Biologiese ingenieurswese of bio-ingenieurswese is die toepassing van beginsels van biologie en die gereedskap van ingenieurswese om bruikbare, tasbare, ekonomies lewensvatbare produkte te skep.[1] Biologiese ingenieurswese gebruik kennis en kundigheid van 'n aantal suiwer en toegepaste wetenskappe,[2] soos massa- en hitte-oordrag, kinetika, biokatalisators, biomeganika, bioinformatika, skeidings- en suiweringsprosesse, bioreaktorontwerp, oppervlakwetenskap, vloeimeganika, termodinamika, en polimeer wetenskap. Dit word gebruik in die ontwerp van mediese toestelle, diagnostiese toerusting, bioversoenbare materiale, hernubare energie, ekologiese ingenieurswese, landbou-ingenieurswese, proses-ingenieurswese en katalise, en ander gebiede wat die lewenstandaarde van samelewings verbeter.

Voorbeelde van bio-ingenieurswese-navorsing sluit in bakterieë wat ontwerp is om chemikalieë te vervaardig, nuwe mediese beeldtegnologie, draagbare en vinnige siektediagnostiese toestelle, prostetika, biofarmaseutiese middels en weefsel-gemanipuleerde organe.[3][4] Bio-ingenieurswese oorvleuel wesenlik met biotegnologie en die biomediese wetenskappe op 'n manier wat analoog is aan hoe verskeie ander vorme van ingenieurswese en tegnologie verband hou met verskeie ander wetenskappe (soos lugvaartingenieurswese en ander ruimtetegnologie tot kinetika en astrofisika).

Oor die algemeen poog biologiese ingenieurs om óf biologiese stelsels na te boots om produkte te skep, óf om biologiese stelsels te verander en te beheer. In samewerking met dokters, klinici en navorsers, gebruik bio-ingenieurs tradisionele ingenieursbeginsels en -tegnieke om biologiese prosesse aan te spreek, insluitend maniere om chemiese en meganiese prosesse te vervang, aan te vul, in stand te hou of te voorspel.[5][6]
