矮螺旋星系
矮螺旋星系是缩小版本的螺旋星系。矮星系的特征是低光度、小直径（距离高于50000秒差距难以被观测到）、低表面亮度和缺乏氢的集团。[1]这类星系也会被分类为低表面亮度星系。
矮螺旋星系，特别是在Sa-Sc的类型中，是非常罕见的。相反的，矮椭圆星系、矮不规则星系和Sm（被认为是螺旋星系和不规则星系之间的类型）等其他类型的则很常见。[1]
位置
绝大部分的矮螺旋星系都位于星系团的外缘，处在星系、星系与星系团气体之间有着强烈交互作用，预料会毁坏大多数矮螺旋星系盘的场所。 [1][2]但是，矮星系和类似螺旋的结构在室女座星系团和后发座星系团内都已经被确认了。[3][4][2][5]
