透镜状星系

哈伯太空望远镜观测到靠近NGC 1553核心的尘埃环,视直径达到0.3’。

透镜星系星系型态分类上是介于椭圆星系螺旋星系之间的星系[1]。透镜星系是圆盘星系(像螺旋星系),已经用尽或丢失了大部分的星际物质,并且只有少量的恒星形成在进行中[2]。结果是,它们以老化的恒星为主(像椭圆星系)。透镜星系的尘埃多数都只在接近核心的区域,也就是在核球的外观上只有微量的。因为它们没有可以明确定义的螺旋臂,如果倾斜者以正面朝像我们,就很难将它们和椭圆星系区分。

型态的变化

虽然透镜星系的形状不像螺旋星系那样的多变,但依然可以从外观上区分出一系列的子分类。一些子分类叙述于下:

棒状

佛科留斯分类系统,透镜星系可以依据中心是否有棒状结构分成三个子系统。SA0用来表示没有棒状结构的透镜星系;SB0用来标示有明显棒状的;SAB0是介于两者之间,用来标示虽有但不明显的棒状.[1]

内环和S-型的子类型

一些透镜星系内部有环圈(S0(r))和S-型(S0(s)),介于两者之间的就标记为(S0(rs))。但是,这些符号的定义主要都用在螺旋星系上,要发现一些星系属于这些类行是很困难的[1]
