Lutesium is 'n chemiese element in die periodieke tabel met die simbool Lu en atoomgetal 71. Lutesium is genoem ná die Latynse naam van Parys (Lutetia), waar dit ontdek is. Lutesium is in 1907 byna gelyktydig, maar onafhanklik deur Georges Urbain, Carl Auer von Welsbach en Charles James ontdek. In 1909 is die ontdekking aan die Franse chemikus Georges Urbain toegeken en die element is volgens sy voorstel lutesium genoem. Die metaal het twee natuurlike isotope. Een is stabiel, die ander is radioaktief maar het 'n lang halfleeftyd.

Die element word dikwels tot die f-blok gereken, maar omdat dit 'n volle 4d14-subskil besit word dit ook dikwels as 'n 5d1-oorgangsmetaal beskou en in die skandiumgroep geplaas. Omdat die Lu3+-ioon net volle elektronskille bevat is dit diamagneties en sy oplossings in kleurloos.
