Ytterbium is ’n chemiese element met die atoomgetal 70 en simbool Yb.

Die element is in 1878 deur die Switserse chemikus Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac ontdek. In 1953 is dit in Ames, Iowa deur Daan, Dennison en Spedding as suiwer metaal vervaardig en dit het die navorsing van sy eienskappe moontlik gemaak. Die element se naam verwys na die Sweedse dorp Ytterby. In die aardkors kom dit as ongeveer 3 dpm voor.

Dit is 'n sagte silwerwit metaal wat goed pletbaar is. Dit reageer vinnig in lug en stadig in water en dit is goed oplosbaar in verdunde sure. Die element word in allooie gebruik en as dotering in glasvesels.[1]

Soos die meeste lantaniede vorm ytterbium hoofsaaklik paramagnetiese Yb3+-ione wat 'n onvolledige f-subskil (4f13) besit. Die element kan egter ook diamagnetiese Yb2+-ione met 'n volledig gevulde f-subskil (4f14) vorm. Die divalente ioon is effens groter: die ioonradius vir oktaëdriese koördinasie is 116 pm teenoor 100,8 pm vir Yb3+ in dieselfde omringing.[2] In alkohol opgeloste Yb3+-ione kan fotochemies in Yb2+-ione omgesit word.[3]
