涡状星系（Whirlpool Galaxy），又叫做M51或是NGC 5194，位在天空北方的猎犬座（Canes Venaciti），长度约有65000光年，距离地球2300万光年。
发现
涡状星系是由查尔斯·梅西耶于1773年10月13日发现的。其伴星系NGC 5195则由皮埃尔·梅香于1781年发现。直至1845年，它才第一次被看出是旋涡星系，而发现它是漩涡状的是威廉·帕森思，他透过一座建于爱尔兰比尔城堡的72吋反射望远镜而得出此观察结果。在2005年，人们观察到涡状星系内的一颗超新星SN 2005cs，其最高亮度达14等。2011年5月31日观察到另一颗属于II型超新星的超新星SN 2011dh，视星等达到13.5，座标是13:30:05.08 +47:10:11.2[5]。有时候，M51是指涡状星系及其伴星系，如果要作出区分的话，则会将涡M51分为M51A（NGC 5194）及M51B（NGC 5195）。
