Kaliumoksied is 'n verbinding van kalium met suurstof met formule K2O.

Kristalstruktuur

Kaliumoksied kristalliseer in die kubiese antifluorietstruktuur.[2] (C1 in die Strukturbericht-klassifikasie).

Eienskappe

Antifluorietstrukture kan vinnigeioongeleiding vertoon en dit verklaar die belangstelling van sommige navorsers. Alkalimetaaloksiede is nogtans moeilik te berei. Kaliumoksied is 'n halfgeleier met 'n indirekte bandgaping.[4]

Kaliumoksied is baie higroskopies en blootgestel aan die vogtige lug vervloei dit en vorm kaliumhidroksied. Die oksied is moeilik deur verbranding van die metaal suiwer te berei omdat gewoonlik ook geelbruinerige kaliumsuperoksied K2O2 gevorm word. 'n Ander reaksie gaan uit van kaliumhidroksied en kaliummetaal:[5]

Daar word min met hierdie stof self gewerk, maar in die landbou en industrie word dikwels gepraat oor die %K2O in kaliumhoudende stowwe soos kunsmis teenwoordig is. Dit verwys na kalium in gebonde staat wat in %K2O uitgedruk word. Dit verwys gewoonlik nie na die oksied self nie.
