Lood(IV)oksied is n verbinding van lood in sy +4 oksidasietoestand met suurstof. Dit het die formule PbO2.

Dit is 'n amfoteriese stof wat dikwels as die katode van loodsuurbatterye gebruik word.

Kristalstruktuur

Die verbinding het twee modifikasies wat in die natuur as minerale voorkom:

  • α-PbO2: scrutinyïet[3] [4]
  • β-PbO2: plattneriet is tetragonaal en het die rutiel-struktuur.[1][5]

Chemiese eienskappe

Lood(IV)oksied is 'n sterk oksideermiddel. Met swaelsuur stel dit suurstof vry:[6]

Met soutsuur word chloor gevorm:[6]

Droë lood(IV)oksied oksideer droë swaeldioksied tot sulfaat en stel daarby hitte vry waardeur die massa gaan gloei. [6]

Dit kan uit lood(II,IV)oksied gevorm word in 'n reaksie met salpetersuur:[6]

Die stof kan uit oplossings van Pb2+, soos van die chloried, verkry word deur hipochloriet OCl- as oksideermiddel by te voeg:[7]

By verhitting stel dit suurstof vry en vorm lood(II)oksied:[7]
