NGC 4212是一个絮结螺旋星系[2][3][4][3]，属于室女座星系团 [5][6][7]。NGC 4212位于后发座，距离地球约5300万光年[8]。这个星系是由天文学家威廉·赫歇尔在1784年4月8日发现的，一开始它在NGC天体表中被命名为NGC 4208。之后他又观测了同一个星系，并将其命名为NGC 4212[9]。天文学家约翰·路易·埃米尔·德雷耳后来经研究发现，NGC 4208与NGC 4212是相同的星系，即NGC 4208就是NGC 4212[10][9]。
