薄板龙属（属名：Elasmosaurus，意为“有轻薄片板的蜥蜴”），又名薄板龙，因为牠骨盆里的板状骨头而得名，生存于白垩纪晚期，是种有极长颈部的蛇颈龙类。
生理构造
[编辑]牠身长14米，重达2,000公斤，是最长的蛇颈龙亚目。牠拥有大型身体与四个鳍状肢。身长的一半为颈部，颈部有超过70个脊椎骨，超过任何动物。牠的小型头部里有锐利牙齿。
发现与历史
[编辑]最早的薄片龙化石是在1868年于美国堪萨斯州发现，并由爱德华·德林克·科普（Edward Drinker Cope）叙述。其他标本在北美的不同地点发现。薄片龙目前已经有许多种。在1999年，肯尼思·卡彭特（Kenneth Carpenter）提出薄片龙只有一个种，模式种（E. platyurus）。
在1868年，科普开始架设薄片龙的化石。科普认为薄片龙应具有短颈部、长尾巴，如同蜥蜴，因此将头部装到尾巴末端上。科普在1869年八月公布了他的薄片龙重建图。这是大众首次看到薄片龙外貌，而牠看起来有长而弯曲的尾巴，类似沧龙类的尾巴
早在1870年，约瑟夫·莱迪（Joseph Leidy）便已在费城自然科学馆的会议中指出这个错误。[1]而在20年后的1890年，奥塞内尔·查利斯·马什（Othniel Charles Marsh）在报纸的文章上指出科普的错误[1] （页面存档备份，存于互联网档案馆）。虽然马什曾经挖出数具蛇颈龙类化石，但他从未提出任何蛇颈龙类的研究。这事件成为他们俩之间交恶数年的导火线之一，这场竞争也就是著名的化石战争。
古生物学

大众媒体常将蛇颈龙塑造呈颈部高举出水面、猎食空中的翼龙类。但如同大部分蛇颈龙类，薄片龙的颈椎关节无法作出头部高举出海面，也受到其颈部重量的影响。其长颈部的重量，将身体的重心保持在前肢附近。所以只有当身体位于浅水的水底时，才能同时将头部、颈部抬离水面，但这动作对于薄板龙而言相当危险。
薄片龙的头部、颈部极可能有控制方向的功能。薄板龙的游泳速度缓慢，可能以跟踪方式猎食鱼群。长颈部可使鱼群较慢发现到薄片龙。薄片龙极可能以小型硬骨鱼、箭石（类似鱿鱼）、鳞齿鱼、鹦鹉螺（软体动物）为食。薄板龙吞食小型石头以协助消化。
薄片龙被认为主要生存于开放性海域。牠们的生活方式所知有限，但根据蛇颈龙类的四肢不灵活，适合游泳的流线型身体，牠们极可能直接在水中产下幼体，类似现代海蛇。
和薄片龙生活于同时期海域的生物包括厚根齿鱼、矛齿鱼、Cimolichthys、Saurocephalus、蜥齿鱼、鳃腺鱼、乞丐鱼、剑射鱼、原金梭鱼、Martinichthys等硬骨鱼；白垩刺甲鲨、白垩鼠鲨、剑吻鲨、伪渡鸦鲨、角鳞鲨等鲨鱼；里伯龙、神河龙、海霸龙、Terminonatator、双臼椎龙、短颈龙、长喙龙、三尖股龙等蛇颈龙物种；沧龙、大洋龙、倾齿龙、海王龙、长鼻蜥龙、圆齿龙、硬椎龙、板踝龙、扁掌龙等沧龙科物种；古巨龟、原盖龟、Porthochelys、Toxochelys等海龟；鸟类则包括不会飞的水生黄昏鸟及会飞的鱼鸟，另外也有无齿翼龙、夜翼龙等翼龙[2]。
大众文化
[编辑]- 薄片龙出现在BBC电视节目《海底霸王》（Sea Monsters）最后一集。
- 环球影业的1957年科幻电影《The Land Unknown》曾出现一只薄片龙。
- 日本电影《你看起来很好吃（おまえうまそうだな）》中，也曾出现一只薄片龙。
