හින්දු පුරාණෝක්තිවේදය ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන්ම හමුවන්නේ වෛදික සාහිත්‍යය,[1] මහාභාරතය සහ රාමායණය වැනි වීරකාව්‍ය,[2] පුරාණ,[3] සහ ප්‍රාදේශීය සාහිත්‍ය ග්‍රන්ථයන් වන දෙමළ පෙරිය පුරාණම් සහ බෙංගාලයේ මංගල් කාව්‍ය වැනි හින්දු ධර්ම ග්‍රන්ථවලිනි. එසේම පුළුල් ලෙස පරිවර්තනය වූ උපමා කථාවන් ඇතුළත් පංචතන්ත්‍රය සහ හිතෝපදේශය මෙන්න අග්නිදිග ආසියානු ග්‍රන්ථයන් හි ද හින්දු පුරාණෝක්තිවේදය හා සම්බන්ධ තොරතුරු හමුවේ.[4][5]
බොහෝවිට හින්දු පුරාණෝක්තිවේදයෙහි ස්ථාවර ඒකාකාරී ස්වභාවයක් දක්නට නොලැබේ. එකම පුරාණෝක්ති කථාව වුව ද, විවිධ ප්‍රභේදයන් තුළ විශේෂයෙන් වෙනස් ප්‍රදේශ සහ සමාජ-ආගමික සම්ප්‍රදායයන් තුළ වෙනස් මුහුණුවරකින් ඉදිරිපත් විය හැක.[6] මෙසේ ග්‍රන්ථවල සඳහන් බොහෝ පුරාවෘත්තවල චරිත නාමයන් වෙනස් කොට හෝ එහි අන්තර්ගත විස්තර අතිශයෝක්තියෙන් ඉදිරියට රැගෙන යනු දැකගත හැක.[6][7] සත්‍රන් හර්ස්ට් අනුව, මෙම පුරාණෝක්තීන් මඟින් සංකීර්ණ වූත් විවිධ වූත් අර්ථ නිරූපණයන් ලබා දේ.[6] එසේවුව ද, ඩොනිජර් ඕ'ෆ්ලැහර්ටිගේ මතය වන්නේ එමඟින් ලබාදෙන ප්‍රධාන පණිවිඩය සහ ආදර්ශයන් වෙනස් නොවන බවයි.[7] කාලයත් සමඟ, විවිධ දාර්ශනික ගුරුකුල මඟින් මෙම කථා පුවත් විකරණය කොට ඒවාට ගැඹුරු අර්ථයන් ලබාදීමට කටයුතු කොට තිබේ.[6]
