过去曾被认为是骗局（如鸭嘴兽）、神秘动物（如㺢㹢狓）以及灭绝生物（如矛尾鱼）[注 3]但经科学确认存在的神秘动物将会自动移至动物学，此分类用于归纳曾经与神秘动物学相关联的未灭绝动物。

该分类用于收录那些灭绝后但仍有目击的生物，需注意的是，并非列表中的每种生物于现在都仍有目击，它们中许多已经不再有新的目击报告。
