由于瑞典地幅南北狭长辽阔,气候、风土各异,地区性特色鲜明,因而发展、建构出多元的瑞典饮食文化。就历史观点而言,在瑞典北部,受萨米文化影响,饮食以肉类如驯鹿以及野味菜肴为主;新鲜蔬菜在南方则扮演较大的角色。相较于意大利、法国等精致饮食,瑞典的传统饮食普遍简素,但口味仍十分具有当地特色;传统菜肴如丰盛的瑞典肉丸,常佐以肉汁和略带酸辛味的越橘果酱食用。此外,瑞典也有在夏秋之交食用发酵鲱鱼surströmming)的习俗。[1]

对于外来文化,瑞典始终采开放、兼容并蓄的态度,包括17世纪至18世纪间传入的法国料理文化,到现代的寿司拿铁咖啡等。在速食方面,披萨热狗自1960年代传入后已十分普及,成为瑞典饮食文化的一部分[2]。接续在后的中东烤肉串炸豆丸子也有同样现象,专卖外国特色菜肴的小餐馆在瑞典亦日渐兴盛。
