柯克伍德空隙

柯克伍德空隙Kirkwood gap)是分布在小行星主带之内的空隙,半长轴(或相当于轨道周期)如右图所见,是位在与木星产生轨道共振的地点上。

举例说,只有少数的小行星在轨道长半径为2.5AU之处,相当于轨道周期3.95年,是木星轨道周期的三分之一(因此称为1:3轨道共振)。其它轨道共振的位置都在周期与木星成简单数值比的位置上,这些微弱的共振只会导致小行星的离散,直方图中的突出通常都肇因于小行星家族的出现。

这些空隙是丹尼尔·柯克伍德在1857年首先注意到的,他也正确的解释了空隙是来自于木星的轨道共振。

近年来,相对来说是少数的高离心率轨道小行星在这些空隙中被发现,例如艾琳达家族(Alinda family)和Griqua family。她们的轨道离心率在以千万年为单位的时间基准内缓缓的增加,最后终将因为与大行星接近的遭遇而脱离共振的区域。

柯克伍德空隙出现在平均轨道半径如下的区间:

  • 1.9 AU(2:9共振)
  • 2.06 AU(1:4 共振)
  • 2.25 AU(2:7共振)
  • 2.5 AU(1:3共振),艾琳达家族小行星的来源。
  • 2.706 AU(3:8共振)
  • 2.82 AU(2:5共振)
  • 2.95 AU(3:7共振)
  • 3.27 AU(1:2共振),格里夸族小行星的来源。
  • 3.7 AU(3:5共振)

最值得注意的空隙是 1:3, 2:5, 3:7,和1:2 的共振。
