傈僳文是一个位于基本多文种平面的Unicode区块，包含了用以书写傈僳语的老傈僳文字符。老傈僳文的字形来自正写与翻转的大写拉丁字母。[3]
在增加这个区块的时候，人们对是否有必要为这个字母分配一个新的区块，或者是否可以将Unicode中尚未出现的字母添加到现有的拉丁字母区块中[4]，进行了激烈的讨论。然而，由于老傈僳文只是在视觉上与拉丁字母相似，而在语义上却完全不同，所以最终采取了分配一个新区块的方法。
