തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറേ ഏഷ്യൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളും ചില വടക്കുകിഴക്കേ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ 1900കൾ മുതൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ പ്രചാരം നൽകിയ പദമാണ്‌ മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ്. മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റിലെ ഏഷ്യൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ പൊതുവേ മലയാളത്തിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന പദമാണ്‌ പശ്ചിമേഷ്യ.

മധ്യപൂർവദേശം എന്ന പദം ഒരു യൂറോപ്യൻ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രവീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായുണ്ടായതാണ്‌. 1850കളിൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇന്ത്യ ഓഫീസിൽനിന്നാവണം ഈ പദം ഉദ്ഭവിച്ചത്. ^[1] അമേരിക്കൻ നാവികതന്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്ന ആല്ഫ്രഡ് തയെർ മഹൻ പ്രസ്തുത പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ചപ്പോൾ മുതലാണ്‌ ഈ പദത്തിനു പ്രചാരം ലഭിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയത്.^[2] അക്കാലത്ത് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യവും റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യവും മദ്ധ്യേഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ തങ്ങളുടെ സ്വാധീനം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാൻ മത്സരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കാലമായിരുന്നു. മഹൻ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ മാത്രമല്ല ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രമായ പേർഷ്യൻ ഗൾഫ് പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെയും തന്ത്രപ്രാധാന്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു.^[3][4] സൂയസ് കനാൽ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഇന്ത്യയിലേയ്ക്കുള്ള റഷ്യൻ മുന്നേറ്റം തടയാനായി സ്വാധീനത്തിലാക്കേണ്ട തന്ത്രപ്രധാനമായ പാത പേർഷ്യൻ ഗൾഫിനു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള, മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ് എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ച, പ്രദേശങ്ങളാണെന്ന് പറയുകയുണ്ടായി. ^[5] മഹൻ ആദ്യമായി ഈ പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ചത് 1902 സെപ്റ്റംബറിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ജർണലായ നാഷണൽ റിവ്യൂവിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ The Persian Gulf and International Relations എന്ന പ്രബന്ധത്തിലാണ്‌.^[6]
