കേരളത്തിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരിനം മരംകൊത്തിയാണ് പാണ്ടൻ പൊന്നി മരംകൊത്തി[1] [2][3][4] - White Naped Woodpecker (ശാസ്ത്രീയ നാമം: Chrysocolaptes festivus). ഇതിന്റെ രൂപം നാട്ടുമരംകൊത്തിയോട് സാമ്യമുണ്ട്.

വളവില്ലാത്ത കൂർത്ത കൊക്കും മരത്തിൽ ബലം കൊടുക്കാവുന്നത്ര ശക്തിയുള്ള വാലും ഇതിന് ഉണ്ട്. വാലിനുമീതെയുള്ള ഭാഗം കറുത്തതാണ്. മുതുകിൽ തൂവെള്ളയായ ഒരു ത്രികോണവും അതിനു ചുട്ടും കറുപ്പും മഞ്ഞയും നിറവുമുണ്ട്. ആൺ‌പക്ഷിക്ക് ചുവന്ന ഉചിപ്പൂവും പിടയ്ക്ക് മഞ്ഞ ഉചിപ്പൂവുമാണ്. കഴുത്തിന്റെ മുൻഭാഗത്ത് നീളത്തിലുള്ള അഞ്ച് വരകൾ കാണാം. കാലിലെ രണ്ടു വിരലുകൾ മുമ്പോട്ടും രണ്ടെണ്ണം പുറകോട്ടുമാണ്. നല്ല നീളമുള്ള നാവ് ഇരകളെ പിടിക്കാൻ നല്ലതാണ്. ഉറുമ്പുകളാണ് ഇവയുടെ പ്രധാന ഭക്ഷണം. ശരീരത്തിന്റെ അടിഭാഗം വെളുത്ത നിറമാണ്. പാണ്ടൻപൊന്നി മരംകൊത്തിയ്ക്ക് നാട്ടുമരംകൊത്തിയുടെ അതേ വലിപ്പമാണ്.
