നാട്ടിൻ‌പുറങ്ങളിലും കാട്ടിലും ഒരു പോലെ കണ്ടുവരാറുള്ള പക്ഷിയാണ് മറാട്ടാ മരംകൊത്തി[1] [2][3][4] (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്: Yellow Fronted Pied Woodpecker) ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളൊഴിച്ച് മറ്റ് ഭാഗങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം ഇവയെ കാണാറുണ്ട്. ചിറകുകൾ, മുതുക്, വാൽ എന്നിവയിൽ വെള്ളകുത്തുകളുണ്ട്. ആൺപക്ഷിയുടെ നെറ്റിയും തലയും മഞ്ഞ നിറവും ഉച്ചിപ്പൂവ് ചുവന്നതുമാണ്. ശരീരത്തിന്റെ അടിവശത്ത് തവിട്ട് വരകളുണ്ട്. പിടയുടെ തലയ്ക്ക് വൈക്കോലിന്റെ നിറമാണ്. വയറ്റത്ത് നടുവിലായി ചുവപ്പ് നിറവും കാണുന്നു.

[തിരുത്തുക]1801 -ൽ ദ്വിനാമപ്രകാരം ഇഗ്ലീഷ് പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ജോൺ ലൻതം മറാഠാ മരംകൊത്തിയെ ആദ്യമായി വിവരിച്ചത് പൈകസ് മഹ്രാട്ടെൻസിസ് എന്നാണ്. [5]ടാക്സോണമി കമ്മിറ്റിയായ പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്ജ്ഞരുടെ യൂണിയൻ ലെയോപൈകസ്, ഡെൻട്രോകോപ്റ്റസ് എന്നീ ജീനസുകളെ സംയോജിപ്പിച്ച് വലിയ ഡെൻട്രോപൈകസ് ജീസസിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റി. [6]ചില വർഗ്ഗീകരണ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാർ ഇതിനെ ഡെൻട്രോകോപോസ് ജീനസിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റുകയുണ്ടായി.
