自杀模仿，定义为一个参照一个知名的自杀方式或特定人物的自杀方式所进行的自杀行为，别称「维特效应」（Werther effect），名稱来自歌德所著的《少年維特的煩惱》。
效应原理
Thomas E. Joiner, Jr在其报告“The Clustering and Contagion of Suicide”中认为，容易自杀的人通常在任何自杀发生之前就聚集在一起，一旦这个群体发生了负性事件，那么群体的自杀倾向会增加，这种增加可以通过社会的支持关心而减弱抵消；以核辐射类比，即当弱势群体（容易自杀者）受到核辐射影响（负性事件）时，集体死亡事件会发生。
他对自己的观点提出了四个方面的解释：
- 负性事件（如亲近的人的自杀）会增加自杀倾向；
- 良好社会支持可以缓解自杀倾向；
- 自杀者本身带有一些特质（如精神疾病）；
- 人以群分，有类似特质的人容易聚集在一起。
有以上四种情况，加之自杀达到阈限，才会发生群体自杀事件，因此这种群体自杀的概率很小很少；家庭由于提供了强烈的社会支持，所以在家庭成员中也很少发生群体自杀。
群体自杀常发生在精神治疗中心、学校宿舍等人数相对较少、人群个体相似性相对较高的小范围地方。他在调查中发现，学校宿舍中，随机分配人群中自杀倾向的相关度低于自由组合的人群（自由组合即意味着有相似特质的人可能聚集在一起），在关系较亲近的人中，当这些人受到负性事件影响时，他们表现出的自杀倾向一致。
媒体影响与自杀模仿的关系
社会心理学家曾从媒体影响的角度研究“自杀模仿”这一现象。当电视台、报纸、广播、网络等媒体宣传和自杀相关的事件后，媒体影响范围内人群的自杀率变化，尤其是报道关于名人自杀或者死亡的事件。研究发现，自杀率可能貌似提高，但若持续跟进调查，则自杀率可能回落，若加入往年的数据，自杀率也可能回落，因此媒体的负性事件报道是否会导致社会自杀率升高有待考证。
虽然自杀的传染性或模仿性虽并未被严格证实，但为防範類似行为，少數国家或地区（土耳其、挪威、巴西、台湾）會對自殺新聞予以成文規範。
