在意大利于1915年5月23日向奥匈帝国宣战，加入第一次世界大战之后，德国认为有义务支持同盟国奥匈帝国攻击意大利船只——尽管德国和意大利并未正式交战。为此，在地中海作战的德国U-潜艇被授予了奥匈帝国的战术编号和旗帜。当德国与意大利于1916年8月28日正式交战后，这一做法得到延续，主要是为了避免滥用国旗的指控。至1916年10月1日，这一做法基本结束，仅剩一些大型U-潜艇仍继续使用奥匈帝国的编号。[1]
