NGC 2022是位于赤道星座猎户座行星状星云,距离太阳有8.21千光年[3]。1785年12月28日,威廉·赫歇尔首次观测到它。他将其描述为:相当明亮,近乎圆形,像一颗直径较大的恒星,像一颗定义不清的行星状星云[7]。在中等大小的业余望远镜英语Amateur telescope making中,它看起来像一小片灰色的。它不是很亮,但仍然很容易透过目镜看到它。 即使是在一个小至0毫米的望远镜中,它也只能用窄带滤光镜,例如OIII滤光镜,将其视为"模糊"的恒星来观察。该天体的形状为长椭球,长轴与短轴之比为1.2[4],一个表观大小28″,光环延伸到40″,这大约是从地球上看到的木星的角直径[8]

这是一个双壳行星状星云,有一个被风压缩的内壳和一个更模糊的第二个壳[9]。内壳的线性半径估计为0.326 ± 0.039 ly,并以28±2 km/s的速度膨胀。第二个外壳几乎是圆形的,膨胀速度比内部的慢[5]。行星状星云中电离元素的质量为0.19 太阳质量,也就是太阳质量的19%[5]。一个微弱的外晕是由中心恒星在渐近巨星支阶段喷出的物质残留物组成[10]
