KIC 9832227是位于天鹅座的一对密接联星系统[4],距离地球大约1,940 (± ~30) 光年[5]。它也被确认是一对轨道周期大约11小时的食双星[4]。2017年天文学家预测在2021年7月至2022年9月间,这一对恒星将合并、成为亮红新星,视星等可以达到2等,并且夜空中将有约一个月的时间可以用肉眼直接看见它[5]。预期两颗恒星合并后将诞生另一颗光度与质量都更高的主序星。然而,2018年9月对观测资料的重新分析显示先前的预测是基于错误的定时观测资料,否定了原先的合并预测时间[6][7][8]

合并预测

天文学家自2013年开始观测KIC 9832227的资料显示其轨道周期逐渐变短。预期这个系统的轨道周期将持续缩短,并且缩短的速率将逐渐增加,最终以两颗恒星核心的合并结束。这种合并将释放出大量的能量。之前,由Romuald Tylenda 领导的小组在2008年已经观察过天蝎座V1309英语V1309 Scorpii合并的过程。然而,天文学家对以Tylenda团队的模型来预测的可靠性仍有所保留,因为它是基于一个还不是很精确的模型来预测爆发的时间[9]。促使恒星合并的物理或机械机制至今仍不明,而这是天文学家研究KIC 9832227的主要重点。

2018年9月,天文学家宣布原本的预测是基于其中一组观测时间偏差12小时的资料。新研究结果显示轨道周期实际上是约2008年开始变化。轨道周期的变化率目前仍不明,但不太可能在原先预测的时间点结束合并[6][7][10]
