鹭形类（学名：Ardeae）[2]这个演化支是在2014年透过基因组分析所提出，包括日鳽总目和水鸟类[3]。其中日鳽总目曾被归类在Metaves这个过时的演化支，而水鸟类则曾被分类为蕉鹃或是鹤形目的姊妹群[4][5]。
在早先的分类法里，鹭形类曾被当成鹳形目的一个亚目，包括一些鹭科鸟类。[6]
