面神经是第七对脑神经，为混合神经，也就是既含有传出神经纤维又含有传入神经纤维。主要掌管脸部表情及眼皮开闭。颜面神经受损可能导致眼皮不能闭合、脸部肌肉瘫痪、口歪、味觉异常等症状。
临床上颜面麻痹（歪斜）可简单分为：周边型及中枢型，周边型颜面神经麻痹中，最常见就是贝尔氏麻痹（Bell's palsy），俗称“鬼吹风”，绝大多数的颜面神经麻痹都属于良性疾病，恢复时间有时需长达六到八周，早期使用类固醇可以有效降低颜面神经的发炎。[需要可靠医学来源]
