泰德 1是第一颗被认证的棕矮星，时为1995年[2]。它是坐落于疏散星团昴宿星团内的天体，距离地球大约400光年（120秒差距）。
这颗黯淡的天体视星等是17.76等，绝对星等为12.38等。它是如此的黯淡，业余的天文望远镜口径必须够大才能看见它。
这颗天体的质量（55 ± 15 MJ）比行星巨大[1]，但是比恒星（0.052 MSun）小了许多。棕矮星的半径是大约与木星相似（或是太阳的十分之一）。它的表面温度是2600 ± 150 K [1]，大约是太阳的一半。它的光度是太阳的0.1%，意思是泰德 1在6个月所辐射出来的总光度，只相当于太阳在4小时所辐射的。它的年龄是大约1亿2千万年，相较之下太阳已经46亿年了。
这颗棕矮星已经热到可以在核心燃烧锂，但还没有像太阳这么热，还不能够进行氢的融合。
