外观
南美貘呈深褐色，由头顶至颈背有一道短而直立的鬃毛。牠们体长达1.8-2.5米，尾巴长5-10厘米，重230公斤。牠们肩高达77-108厘米。
分布
南美貘栖息在南美洲亚马逊雨林及亚玛逊盆地近水的地方。牠们的分布地北临委内瑞拉、哥伦比亚及圭亚那，南至巴西、阿根廷及巴拉圭，西至玻利维亚、秘鲁及厄瓜多尔。
行为
南美貘能游善跑，就算在崎岖的山地也能奔走自如。牠们的寿命约25-30岁。在野外，牠们的天敌主要是鳄鱼及大型的猫科，如美洲豹及美洲狮。南美貘当受惊时会走入水中。牠们每个月也会交配。

南美貘的数量减少是因被烹吃及失去栖息地所致。牠们一般被认为是濒危物种，但灭绝的可能性则较其他的貘为低。[1]其被列为《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》附录二的物种，被限制出口及贸易。
