荷兰语“u”就是这个音。

卡特福特注解道[需要完整来源]有圆唇前、后元音的主要的语言有种独特的唇化，后突出元音和前扁平元音。但有些语言有前突出元音，如北日耳曼语支。其中之一——瑞典语不仅有区分这两种前圆唇元音的对立，还有元音高度和音长的对立。[48]
鉴于IPA里没有用来区分突出和扁平圆唇音的变音符号，老式唇化符号⟨◌̫⟩会以ad hoc标来标记前突出元音。另一可行的记录方案是用⟨ʏʷ⟩或⟨ɪʷ⟩ (一个唇化的次闭前元音)，但这可能会被误读为双元音。
次闭前突出元音可记作⟨ʏ̫˕⟩，⟨ʏ̞ʷ⟩或⟨ɪ̞ʷ⟩。
至于一般不用⟨ʏ⟩ (或⟨y⟩)转写的半闭前突出元音，见半闭前突出元音。
声学上，此音位于更典型的扁平次闭前元音[ʏ]和展唇次闭前元音[ɪ]“之间”。
特征

典型的[ʏ]有弱圆唇(虽然是扁平音)，比周围的基本元音更像[œ]。
