සබ්මැරීනයක් හෙවත් කුමුදුවක්[1] යනු ජල ප්‍රවාහන යාත්‍රාවකි.මෙයට දිය යටදී නිදහසේ ක්‍රියා කළ හැකිය. සබ්මර්සිබ්ලයක ඇති සීමිත ක්‍රියාවලට වඩා වෙනස් ක්‍රියාවලියක් මෙහි අන්තර්ගත වේ.සබ්මැරීනය යන වචනය බොහෝ විට යෙදෙන්නේ විශාල ස්වයංපාලක මිනිසුන් ගමන් කරන යාත්‍රාවකටයි. කෙසේ වුවත් ඓතිහාසිකව හෝ අනියම් ලෙස සම්බැරීනය යන්න කුඩා හෝ මධ්‍ය ප්‍රමාණයේ යාත්‍රාවන්ට,දුරස්ථ පාලක වාහනයන්ට,රොබෝවන්ට ද යෙදිය හැකිය.සබ්මැරීන යන වචනයට ඇත්තේ නාම විශේෂණ අර්ථයකි.එනම් මුහුද යට යන අරුත යි.එනමුත් සබ්මැරීන් ඉංජිනේරු විද්‍යාව හා සබ්මැරීන් කේබල් යන වචන සබ්මැරීන් යන්නෙහි මුලික අර්ථය හා අදාළ නොවේ.සබ්මැරීන් යනු සබ්මැරීන් බෝට්ටු යන්නේ කෙටි යෙදුමයි.
ඓතිහාසික හේතුන් නිසා සබ්මැරීන බෝට්ටු ලෙසද හැඳින්වේ. මෙයට හේතුව නැවකින් මුහුදට හෙලන යාත්‍රා බෝට්ටු ලෙස හැඳින්වීමයි. මුල් සබ්මැරීන දියත් කෙරුනේද මේ ආකරයටයි.
ඉංග්‍රීසි යෙදුමක් වන යු බෝට් යන්න හටගෙන ඇත්තේ ජර්මන් බසින් සබ්මැරීනයට යොදන නම අධාරයෙනි. `U-Boot`, යන්නේ අදහස වන්නේ මුහුද යට බෝට්ටුව යන්නයි.
පරීක්ෂණාත්මක සබ්මැරීන බිහිවී තිබුණ ද සබ්මැරීන සැලැස්ම දියත් වුයේ 19 වැනි ශතවර්ෂයේ දීය. පළමු ලෝක යුද්ධ සමයේ දී සබ්මැරීන බහුල ලෙස භාවිතා විය.ඒවා භාවිත වුයේ මෙවැනි කාර්යයන් සදහාය. සතුරු නෞකා හෝ සබ්මැරීන වලට පහරදීම,ගුවන් යානා භාරක නෞකා ආරක්ෂාවට,බාධක පැමිණවීම යනු ඒවාය. තවද බැලිස්ටික් මිසයිල සබ්මැරීන න්‍යෂ්ටික ප්‍රහාර සඳහා ද නැවත පිරික්සුම් සඳහා සහ විශේෂ භට කණ්ඩායම් අබිරහස් ලෙස යෙදවීම සඳහා ද යොදා ගැනේ. සාමාන්‍ය ජනයා මේවා යොදා ගන්නේ සාගර විද්‍යාව,බේරා ගැනීම්,නිරීක්ෂණ සහ පහසුකම් නිරීක්ෂණය/නඩත්තු කටයුතු සඳහා ය. සබ්මැරීන විශේෂ ලෙස යොදා ගන්නේ මුහුද යට සෙවීම් සහ බේරාගැනීම්, මුහුද යට අලුත්වැඩියා කටයුතු ආදිය සදහාය. සබ්මැරීන සංචාරක සහ අධ්‍යයන පර්යේෂණ සඳහා ද යොදා ගැනේ.
සබ්මැරීන සතුව විවිධ හැකියාවන් පවතී.ස්වයංක්‍රියව පාලනය කිරීමට ඇති හැකියාව මෙන්ම එක් පුද්ගලයෙක් හෝ දෙදෙනකු සමඟ පැය කිහිපයක් ක්‍රියාත්මක වීමේ සිට මාස හයක් පමණ ක්‍රියාත්මක වීමට ඇති හැකියාව දැක්විය හැකිය. මෙයට උදාහරණයක් ලෙස රුසියානු ටයිපූන් පංතිය දැක්විය හැකිය. සබ්මැරීන වලට මිනිසුන්ට යා නොහැකි ස්ථානවල පවා ක්‍රියාත්මක වීමේ හැකියාව පවතී. වර්තමාන ගැඹුරු දිය සබ්මැරීනවල මූලාරම්භය සනිටුවන් වන්නේ බාතිස්කේප් වලිනි,එනම් එය කිමිදුම් කුටියේ වර්ධන අවස්ථාවකි.
බොහෝ විශාල සබ්මැරීනවල සිලින්ඩරාකාර බඳක්,කෝණික කෙරවලවල් සහ සිරස් ව්‍යුහයක් සහිත බෝට්ටුවක් අඩංගු වේ.මෙය සාමාන්‍යයෙන් නැව මැද පවතී.මෙහි සන්නිවේදන හා සංවේදන උපකරණ සහ පරීක්ෂක අඩංගු වේ.නවීන සබ්මැරීන වල මෙම ව්‍යුහය රුවල ලෙස හැඳින්වේ. පැරණි ආකෘතිවල මෙහෙයුම් ස්ථානයක් දැකිය හැකිය. වෙනම ස්ථාපනය වු,සබ්මැරීන කඳ ට ඉහළින් පීඩන වැස්ම කෙටි පරීක්ෂණයන් යෙදීම සඳහා භාවිතා විය.
සබ්මැරීනයේ කෙළවර අවර පෙත්ත සහ ද්‍රවගතික පාලක වරල් පත් අන්තර්ගත විය.කුඩා සහ ගැඹුරු කිමිදුම් සබ්මැරීන මෙම සාම්ප්‍රදායික ආකෘතියෙන් බැහැර විය.
