මෙම ලිපිය සදහන් වන්නේ දන්ත වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාව පිළිබදවවන අතර දත්වල සත්කාර ක්‍රම පිළිබදව දැන ගැනීම සදහා මුඛ සෞඛ්‍ය හෝ දන්ත ශල්‍ය ක්‍රම බලන්න.
දන්ත වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාව යනු ඇගයීම, රෝග නිර්ණය කිරීම, වළක්වා ගැනීම හා ප්‍රතිකාර කිරීම මගින් මුඛ කුහ‍රයෙහි, මුහුණ හා හනු ප්‍රදේශවල හා ඒ අවට ඇති අදාල කොටස්වල රෝග තත්ත්වයන් පිළිබදව සිදු කරන අධ්‍යයනයන්ය. මෙම ක්ෂේත්‍රයෙහි ක්‍රියාකාරීවන පුද්ගලයන් දන්ත වෛද්‍යවරුන් යැයි හැදින්වේ. මෙලෙස මුඛ සෞඛ්‍ය ලබාදීම පිණිස ක්‍රියාකාරීවන අනෙකුත් පුද්ගලයින් දන්ත චිකිත්සකවරුන්, දන්ත කාර්මික ශිල්පීන්, දන්ත සෞඛ්‍යවේදීන් හා දන්ත සහායකයන්ය.
දන්ත වෛද්‍යවරයෙකු යනු දන්ත වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාව හැදැරීම පිණිස උපාධි ලබීමෙන් පසු වෘත්තිමය වශයෙන් සුදුසුකම් ලැබූ පුද්ගලයෙකි. ඔවුන්හට දන්ත වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාව හා දන්ත ශල්‍ය විද්‍යාව පිළිබව විවිධ උපාධි ලබාගත හැකිය. ඒවා නම් Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) , Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent), Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) හා Bachelor of Dental Surgery / Chirurgiae (BDS/BChD) යන උපාධීන්ය. බටහිර රටවල්වල සුදුසුකම් ලද දන්ත වෛද්‍යවරයෙකු වීම පිණිස අවම වශයෙන් වසර 4 ක පශ්චාත් උපාධි අධ්‍යයනයක් සම්පුර්ණ කළ යුතුය. සාමාන්‍යයෙන් අධ්‍යාපනික වටපිටාවක් තුළ රෝගීන් සමග වසර දෙකක සායනික අත්දැකීමක් අවශ්‍ය වේ. බොහෝ රටවල දන්ත වෛද්‍යවරුන් ආචාර උපාධියක් හෝ වෛද්‍ය උපාධියක් නොලබන අතර ඔවුන් ගෞරව නාමයක් වන “Doctor” යන්නෙන් පිදුම් ලබති.

[සංස්කරණය]- ^ Whether Dentists are referred to as "Doctor" is subject to geographic variation. For example, they are called "Doctor" in the USA. In the UK, dentists have traditionally been referred to as "Mister" as they identified themselves with barber surgeons more than physicians (as do surgeons in the UK, see Surgeon#Titles). However more UK dentists now refer to themselves as "Doctor", although this was considered to be potentially misleading by the British public in a single report (see Costley and Fawcett 2010).
