സസ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ (കിങ്ഡം : പ്ലാന്റേ) ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ബഹുകോശ യൂക്കാരിയോട്ടുകളാണ് സസ്യങ്ങൾ(അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ചെടികൾ), ഹരിതസസ്യങ്ങൾ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾ, ഓഷധികൾ, കുറ്റിച്ചെടികൾ, തൃണങ്ങൾ, വള്ളികൾ, പന്നലുകൾ, പായലുകൾ, ഹരിതനിറമുള്ള ആൽഗകൾ തുടങ്ങിയവ സസ്യസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ബീജസസ്യങ്ങൾ, ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റുകൾ, പന്നൽച്ചെടികൾ, അനുഫേണുകൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിർവചിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഏകദേശം 350,000 സസ്യവർ‌ഗങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നതായി ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. 2004 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും ഏകദേശം 287,655 വർഗങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. അവയിൽ 258,650 സപുഷ്പികളും 18,000 ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റുകളും ആണ്.

ഹരിതസസ്യങ്ങൾ അവയ്ക്കാവശ്യമായ ഊർജ്ജത്തിന്റെ മുഖ്യപങ്കും സ്വരൂപിക്കുന്നത് സൂര്യനിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രകാശസംശ്ലേഷണം എന്ന പ്രക്രിയ വഴി ആണ്. ഭക്ഷ്യശൃംഖലയിൽ ഉത്പാദകരായി നിലനിന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഇവ സൗരോർജ്ജത്തെ രാസോർജ്ജമാക്കി മാറ്റി ഉപഭോക്താക്കളായ ജന്തുക്കളിലെത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഭൗമകാലാവസ്ഥാ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിനും ജൈവവൈവിധ്യം നിലനിർത്തുന്നതിനും ജീവൻരക്ഷാ ഔഷധങ്ങളുത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനും സസ്യങ്ങൾ അത്യന്താപേക്ഷിതമാണ്.

രണ്ടു തരം സസ്യങ്ങളാണ് ഭൂമിയിൽ നിലവിലുള്ളത്. കാൾ ലിനേയസ് എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ് ആദ്യമായി സസ്യങ്ങളെ ഈ രീതിയിൽ വർഗ്ഗീകരിച്ചത്.
