ഡെവോണിയൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിനും പെർമിയൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിനും മദ്ധ്യേയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടമാണ് കാർബോണിഫെറസ് കാലഘട്ടം. ഇന്നേക്ക് 3589 ലക്ഷം വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപ് ആരംഭിച്ച് 2989 ലക്ഷം വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപ് അവസാനിച്ചതായി കണക്കാക്കുന്ന കാലഘട്ടമാണിത്. 358.9 ദശലക്ഷം വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് ഡെവോണിയൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം മുതൽ 60 ദശലക്ഷം വർഷങ്ങൾ നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന പാലിയോസോയിക്കിന്റെ ഒരു ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായ കാലഘട്ടവും സംവിധാനവുമാണ് കാർബോണിഫറസ്. കാർബണിഫറസ് എന്ന പേരിന്റെ അക്കാലത്ത് ആഗോളതലത്തിൽ രൂപംകൊണ്ട നിരവധി കൽക്കരി തടങ്ങളെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കാർബോണിഫറസ് പലപ്പോഴും വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിൽ രണ്ട് ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്ര കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. മുമ്പത്തെ മിസിസിപ്പിയൻ, പിന്നീട് പെൻസിൽവാനിയൻ എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ടു കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളാണിവ.
