260-300 [1][2] ഓളം അലങ്കാരസസ്യങ്ങളുടെ സ്പീഷീസുകളുള്ള ഐറിസ് (Iris) ഇറിഡേസീ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരു ജനുസാണ്. റെയിൻബോ എന്ന ഗ്രീക്ക് വാക്കിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ പേര് വന്നത്. റെയിൻബോയുടെ ഗ്രീക്ക് ദേവതയായ ഐറിസ് എന്ന പേരിലാണ് ഈ സസ്യം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. വിവിധ സ്പീഷീസുകളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന പൂക്കളുടെ നിറങ്ങളെയാണ് ഈ പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് ചില എഴുത്തുകാർ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നു.[3]
