അറൗകാരിയേസി കുടുംബത്തിലെ പിനോഫൈറ്റ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ജനുസ്സാണ് വോളമൈ. ന്യൂ സൗത്ത് വെയിൽസിലെ വോളമൈ നാഷണൽ പാർക്കിലെ മിതശീതോഷ്ണ മഴക്കാടുകളിൽ 1994-ൽ ഇതിന്റെ ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയൻ ഇനമായ വോളമൈ നോബിലിസ് കണ്ടെത്തുന്നതുവരെ ഫോസിൽ രേഖകളിലൂടെ മാത്രമേ ഇവ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. സിഡ്‌നിയുടെ വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് 150 കിലോമീറ്റർ (93 മൈൽ) അകലെ വീതികുറഞ്ഞതും കുത്തനെയുള്ളതുമായ മണൽക്കല്ലുകൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു മലയിടുക്കിലാണ് ഇതു സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. വോളമൈ നാഷണൽ പാർക്കിന്റെ പേരാണ് ഈ ജനുസിന് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.[2]
ശ്രദ്ധേയ സാഹിത്യങ്ങളിലും ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലും ഈ വൃക്ഷത്തെ സാർവത്രികമായി വോളമൈ പൈൻ എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഇത് ഒരു യഥാർത്ഥ പൈൻ മരമോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പൈൻ കുടുംബത്തിലെ അംഗമോ അല്ല. മറിച്ച്, ഇത് അറൗകാരിയേസി കുടുംബത്തിലെ അഗത്തിസ്, അറൗകാരിയ എന്നിവയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.[3]
ഐ.യു.സി.എന്നിന്റെ റെഡ് ലിസ്റ്റിൽ വോളമൈ പൈൻ ഗുരുതരമായി വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്ന ഇനമായി വർഗ്ഗീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.[1] ഇത് ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിൽ നിയമപരമായി പരിരക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[4] ദുർബലമായ ഇവയുടെ എണ്ണം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുള്ള നടപടികളുടെ രൂപരേഖയിലൂടെ ഒരു വീണ്ടെടുക്കൽ പദ്ധതി തയ്യാറാക്കി. ഈ ഇനം ദീർഘകാലാടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് ഉറപ്പാക്കുകയാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പൂർണ്ണമായ ലക്ഷ്യം.[4]

25–40 മീറ്റർ (82–131 അടി) ഉയരത്തിൽ വളരുന്ന നിത്യഹരിത വൃക്ഷമാണ് വോളീമിയ നോബിലിസ്. പുറംതൊലി കടും തവിട്ടുനിറവും മുഴകൾ നിറഞ്ഞതുമാണ്.[5]
കണ്ടെത്തൽ

ഡേവിഡ് നോബിൾ, മൈക്കൽ കാസ്റ്റെലിൻ, ടോണി സിമ്മർമാൻ എന്നിവർ 1994 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 10-നാണ് ഇത് ആദ്യമായി കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. പുതിയ മലയിടുക്കുകൾക്കായി പ്രദേശത്ത് പര്യവേക്ഷണം നടത്തിയതിനാലാണ് ഇത് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.[6] നോബിളിന് നല്ല ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ പരിജ്ഞാനമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ പുറംതൊലി കാരണം ഈ ഇനം അസാധാരണമെന്ന് പെട്ടെന്നുതന്നെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. വ്യക്തമായി തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ വേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം ഇതിന്റെ മാതൃകകൾ എടുത്തു. ആർക്കെങ്കിലും സസ്യങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ കഴിയുമെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചു.[7] കോണുകൾ ശേഖരിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഹെലികോപ്റ്റർ അശ്രദ്ധമായി പൈനുകളിലൊന്ന് അതിന്റെ റോട്ടർ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വെട്ടിമാറ്റിയപ്പോൾ ദേശീയോദ്യാനത്തിന്റെ നിലപാടിനെ തകർക്കുന്ന രീതിയിലായിരുന്നു. നാഷണൽ പാർക്കുകളിലുള്ള സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ വിൻ ജോൺസും ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ ഗാർഡനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ജാൻ അലനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഈ മാതൃകകൾ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. തിരിച്ചറിയൽ നടത്തിയെങ്കിലും അവരുടെ കണ്ടെത്തലിന്റെ പൂർണ്ണ വ്യാപ്തി ആറുമാസത്തോളം പഠിച്ചില്ല. ഈ ഇനത്തിന് പിന്നീട് ഡേവിന്റെ പേര് നൽകി.
