ആൽസിഡേ പക്ഷികുടുംബത്തിലെ ആൽകാ ജനുസിൽപ്പെട്ട കടൽപക്ഷികളാണ് ഓക്ക് പക്ഷികൾ. ആർട്ടിക് സമുദ്രം, അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക്-പസഫിക് സമുദ്രങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്തരഭാഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളാണ് ഇവയുടെ വാസസ്ഥാനം. കത്തികൊക്കൻ എന്നു പേരു പറയാവുന്ന റേസർബിൽ (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്: Alca torda), ഇന്നു നാമാവശേഷമായി കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന ഗ്രേറ്റ് ഓക്ക് (Alca-Pinguinus-impennis) എന്നിവയാണ് ആൽകാ ജനുസിലെ പ്രധാനാംഗങ്ങൾ.[1]
ഉദ്ദേശം മുക്കാൽ മീറ്റർ നീളമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഗ്രേറ്റ് ഓക് നേരേ നിവർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്നതും, പറക്കാൻ കഴിവില്ലാത്തതും ആയിരുന്നു. ചിറകുകൾ ചുരുങ്ങി തുഴ (paddle) പോലെയായി തീർന്നിരുന്നതാണ് ഇതിനു കാരണം. ഈ ചിറകുകൾ വെള്ളത്തിൽ നീന്തുന്നതിന് സഹായകമായിരുന്നു.[2]
കാഴ്ചയിൽ പെൻഗ്വിനുകളോടു സാദൃശ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഈ പക്ഷി ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിൽ ഉത്തരാർധഗോളത്തിൽ ധാരാളമായി കാണപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ, പറക്കാൻ കഴിവില്ലാതിരുന്ന ഈ പക്ഷികളെ സഞ്ചാരികളും മീൻപിടുത്തക്കാരും തൂവലിനും മറ്റും വേണ്ടി ധാരാളമായി പിടികൂടി കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയതിന്റെ ഫലമായി 19-ം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മധ്യത്തോടെ ഇവ നാമാവശേഷം ആയിത്തീർന്നു.[3]
ഇന്നു ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന അൽകാ സ്പീഷീസുകളെല്ലാം തന്നെ ലഘുദൂരത്തിൽ പറക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ളവ ആണെങ്കിലും , പറക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള കഴിവ് പരിമിതമാകുന്നു. വീതികുറഞ്ഞ് കുറുകിയ ചിറകുകളാണ് ഇതിനു കാരണം. ഇവയുടെ ശരീരഘടന പൊതുവേ വെള്ളത്തിൽ മുങ്ങുന്നതിനും, നീന്തുന്നതിനും പറ്റിയ വിധത്തിലുള്ളതാണ്. ഈ സമയത്ത് ചിറകുകൾ ഏറെ സഹായകമാകുന്നു.[4]
ഒരു കുരുവിയേക്കാൾ അല്പം മാത്രം വലിപ്പക്കൂടുതലുള്ള ഡവ്കൈ (Plautus alle) മറ്റൊരിനം ഓക് പക്ഷിയാണ്. ഉത്തരപസഫിക്കിൽ ഓക്ലെറ്റ് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന അഞ്ചിനങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇവയിൽ ചിലത് ഡവ്കൈ ഇനത്തെക്കാൾ ചെറുതായിരിക്കും. ഇവയെല്ലാം സമൂഹജീവികളാണ്. ഇണചേരലും അടയിരിക്കലും എല്ലാം കൂട്ടമായിത്തന്നെ. ചെറിയ പ്ലവക (plankton) ങ്ങളെയും ക്രസ്റ്റേഷ്യകളെയും ഭക്ഷണമാക്കുന്ന ഡവ്കൈയും, ഓക്ലൈറ്റുകളും, അവയുടെ മുട്ടകളും, എക്സിമോകളുടെ ആഹാരത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രധാനഭാഗമാണ്.[5]
