주머니두더지는 주머니두더지목(Notoryctemorphia)의 유일한 속이다. 아주 귀하며 서부 오스트레일리아의 사막에서만 산다. 대부분 땅속에서 살지만 가끔 땅 밖으로 나올 때가 있다.(보통 비가 온 후) 이들은 앞을 볼 수가 없으며(눈이 살 밑으로 들어감), 밖으로 노출된 귀가 없고 피부에 그냥 구멍만 뚫려 있다. 영구적인 굴은 짓지 않으며 굴을 파고 들어갈때 뒤를 메우면서 간다. 몸무게는 40~60g이며, 몸길이는 12~16cm이다. 곤충을 먹고 사며 주로 딱정벌레의 애벌래나 굴벌레나방류의 애벌레를 먹고 산다.
주머니두더지는 아프리카에 사는 황금두더지와 비슷한 생김새를 지녔다. 차이는 거의 없으며 제일 큰 차이는 주머니두더지는 육아낭이 있다는 것이다. 주머니두더지는 남부주머니두더지와 북부주머니두더지 2종이 있다.
