Yggdrasil é a árbore do mundo na mitoloxía nórdica, un freixo xigantesco no que están os sete mundos que existen.

Localizada no centro do universo ligaba os nove mundos da cosmoloxía nórdica, cuxas raíces máis profundas están situadas en Niflheim, fincaban os mundos subterráneos; o tronco era Midgard, ou sexa, o mundo material dos homes; a parte máis alta, que se dicía tocar o Sol e a Lúa, chamábase Asgard (a cidade dourada), a terra dos deuses, e Valhala, o local onde os guerreiros viquingos eran recibidos despois de morreren, con honra, en batalla.

Se as súas ramas crecen e están sas, todo florece. Se, pola contra, podrecen, as cousas van mal no Universo.

Nesta árbore viven as Norns, que son as tecedoras do destino na mitoloxía nórdica. Tamén hai un dragón chamado Níðhöggr, que devora as súas raíces coa esperanza de que caia.

Cóntase que nas froitas de Yggdrasil están as respostas das grandes preguntas da humanidade. Por ese motivo ela sempre é gardada por unha centuria de valquirias, denominadas protectoras, e soamente os deuses poden visitala. Nas lendas nórdicas, dicíase que as follas de Yggdrasil podían traer persoas de volta a vida e, apenas un dos seus froitos, curaría calquera doenza.
