明亮X射线尾

PSR J0357+3205可能拖曳了一条极长(长度超过4光年)的明亮X射线[1]。这条长尾的存在让天文学家相当困惑,因为它和其他来自该脉冲星的尾巴有共通特征,但在某些方面却不同。如果该X射线尾与地球的距离和脉冲星相同,那它的延伸长度是4.2光年[1]。这条X射线尾可能是能量来自脉冲星自转速度减慢并损失能量的“自转驱动”(Rotation-powered)脉冲星所拥有的同类结构中最长的其中一条(其他形式的脉冲星包含能量来自强大磁场或吸积物质的中子星)。

X射线尾机制解释

X射线尾可能经由脉冲星风中的高能粒子和脉冲星周围环绕的磁力线中粒子产生[1]。其他脉冲星周围的X射线尾产生原因被认为是因为脉冲星以超音速通过太空时产生弓形震波,并且脉冲星和星际气体交互作用将粒子扫到脉冲星后方被脉冲星拖曳而产生。不过,弓形震波这项解释不一定正确,并且有数个问题必须解释。例如PSR J0357+3205经由自转速度减慢而损失的能量非常少[1]。能量损失在这里是重要的,因为损失的能量会转换成辐射并提供形成自脉冲星的粒子能量,并且限制了脉冲星风中粒子所能获得能量多寡,而这些能量可能与尾部的X射线能量并不符合。对这项解释的另一个挑战则是其他有弓形震波的脉冲星在周围会有明亮的X射线辐射,但在PSR J0357+3205周围却没有相同的现象。并且尾部最明亮部分远离脉冲星,和其他脉冲星尾最明亮部分在弓形震波处不同[1]。如果该脉冲星的移动方向和X射线尾方向不同,就能支持弓形震波的说法。
