1号染色体是人类染色体中最大的一条。如同其他的体染色体，一般人类身体内的细胞中，会有两条1号染色体。在1号染色体，缠绕了大约245,522,847个核苷酸碱基对（DNA的基本讯息单位），大概包含了人类细胞中8%的DNA。
辨识染色体上的基因是遗传学研究的一部分。在2000年时，辨识出来的基因是897个；根据2007年NCBI的资料，1号染色体中一共包含2782个基因；2010年，1号染色体上发现的基因数量在原有的基础上增至4228个，共能编码1985种不同的蛋白质。[2]人类基因组计划花了20年才将这些序列排序完成。
另外单一核苷酸多型性（single nucleotide polymorphism；SNP；核苷酸的变异量）在1号染色体中大约是74,000。
