[编辑]谢丽尔出生于 泰恩河畔纽卡斯尔，她是其母亲Joan Callaghan五名小孩中的老四，谢丽尔的父母在她11岁时分开。[21]
1990年，她首次在电视机前亮相，与弟弟Garry共同拍摄英国天然气的广告。[22]谢丽尔从小时候即非常喜欢跳舞，她自4岁就开始学序列舞，[23]并在9岁时加入 英国皇家芭雷舞蹈团的培育学校。[24]

谢丽尔在 2002 年时以一曲 Have You Ever" 参加 Popstars: Th Rivals 参加实镜歌唱选秀节目。[25]于数千名来自英国各个地方的选手中脱颖而出，由评审 Pete Waterman、Louis Walsh 和 Geri Halliwell 选出10名女孩以及10名男孩，参加后期的比赛。最后的参选名单，在每星期六的晚上以直播的方式，选出每周淘汰及入选的选手，并加入少量的电话投票，直到选出男女分组中的各前5名。最后，谢丽尔和 南汀·科伊尔、莎拉·哈汀、妮可拉·罗伯兹、金柏莉·华许组成新女子团体呛女生合唱团并于 2002年11月30日正式出道。[2]
