  • 18岁以上的成年公民的义务选举权（其中包括被选举权，以及全民公决，选举权是每一个成年公民的义务）
  • 有义务成为陪审团的一员（任何成年公民都有可能被选进陪审团，一旦被选中必须要接受要求）
  • 必要时保卫澳大利亚（任何成年公民都有义务在国家受到危险时保卫国家）

权利

  • 赋予每一个公民参加联邦、州或领地，全民公投的的投票选举权力。
  • 申请加入澳大利亚国防军，政府机要部门，以及其他公众服务机构工作的权力。
  • 参加议员选举。
  • 申请澳大利亚护照，并自由出入澳大利亚以及以免签证访问世界上大约188个国家和地区的权利。
  • 在海外时可以向澳大利亚政府以及外交官寻求帮助。
  • 将海外出生的孩子登记为根据血缘关系而取得国籍的澳大利亚公民。

取得公民资格

任何人士在申请澳大利亚公民资格前必须要先成为澳洲永久性居民，并曾以任何合法签证在澳大利亚本土至少连续居住满四年时间、其中至少有一年是持有澳大利亚永久居民签证。

在满足时间要求后，永久居民签证持有者可以在任何州或是澳大利亚驻外使领馆报名申请入籍考试。考试分为面试和机试两个部分，通过考试后将会有一个等待联邦移民部确定的过程。一旦资格被确认，即会被提供一个入籍仪式的时间，在仪式上宣誓后方自法律上成为澳大利亚公民。

根据联邦法律的规定，任何非出生在本土的公民在归化为澳大利亚公民后，澳大利亚永久居民资格会自动丧失。此外，澳大利亚亦是允许多重国籍的国家，联邦法律规定澳大利亚公民可以自由选择保留并使用其他国家的护照，但身为澳洲公民在澳大利亚边境口岸出入境则必须使用澳大利亚护照。
