恶魔核心[1]Demon Core)指的是一个亚临界质量制球体,直径89毫米,重6.2千克。恶魔核心诞生于美国二战期间的曼哈顿计划,用作早期原子弹裂变弹芯。该弹芯在洛斯阿拉莫斯实验室引发过两起临界事故,一次是在1945年8月21日,另一次是在1946年5月21日,导致钚球达到超临界质量、引发辐射中毒,并直接导致两名科学家哈里·K·达格利恩路易斯·斯洛廷死亡,恶魔核心也因此得名。该弹芯原定用于掷向日本的第三发核弹中,但由于日本投降,弹芯也就转为核试验之用。
