地理位置
东临朝鲜东海，南接文川市、法洞郡，西倚平安南道阳德郡，北邻咸镜南道高原郡。
境内西枕阿飞虎岭山脉，西南部的头流山为最高峰（1324m），有箭滩江流经。有江原线经过。
人口、行政区划
2008年人口约85,123人。
下分1邑、3劳动者区、15里。
历史
本为咸镜南道文川郡一部分，1946年文川郡改划入江原道，1952年12月文川郡之川内面、云林面、明龟面等划出独立设郡。
