在太阳系，
- 内侧行星（Inferior planets）是轨道在地球内侧绕行太阳的行星：水星和金星。
- 外侧行星（Superior planets）是轨道在地球外侧绕行太阳的行星：火星、木星、土星、天王星和海王星。在历史上，冥王星曾经是地外行星。
历史
[编辑]这些专有名词最初是用在克劳狄斯·托勒密的宇宙观，用来区分本轮位于太阳环绕地球的轨道内侧的行星（水星和金星）和在太阳轨道之外的行星（火星、木星和土星）[1]。
在16世纪，这些名词被否认托勒密宇宙观模型的尼古拉斯·哥白尼修饰，用来区分行星的轨道相对于地球轨道的大小[2]。

这个名词可以有更广泛的用法，例如：从火星看，地球是一颗在内侧的行星。
其它的行星术语
[编辑]这些名词的意义不同于内行星和外行星，他们是以小行星带为分界，轨道在小行星带的里面，较靠近太阳的是内行星，外侧离太阳较远的的是外行星。内侧行星也不同于微型行星（minor planet）或矮行星。外侧行星也不同于气态巨行星（gas giant）。
