สายล่อฟ้า
สายล่อฟ้า เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่คิดประดิษฐ์ขึ้นโดย เบนจามิน แฟรงคลิน[1] เนื่องจากเขาไม่เข้าใจฟ้าผ่า จึงสร้างเครื่องมือที่เรียกว่า “สายล่อฟ้า” เพื่อเป็นอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในการถ่ายเทประจุไฟฟ้าจากก้อนเมฆ โดยตรงปลายแหลมของสายล่อฟ้าจะมีสนามไฟฟ้าที่ค่อนข้างแรงกว่าที่อื่น สนามไฟฟ้านี้จะเหนี่ยวนำโมเลกุลของอากาศให้เข้ามาใกล้ ๆ แล้วรับประจุไฟฟ้าส่วนเกินไป ทำให้ลดความต่างศักย์ที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างก้อนเมฆและหลังคาลง โดยการนำผ่านสายเหนี่ยวนำลงสู่พื้นดิน
ทั้งนี้ฟ้าผ่านั้นสร้างความตื่นตระหนกแก่มนุษย์ในช่วงแรก ๆ อย่างมากและผู้คนในปัจจุบันยังคงกลัวฟ้าผ่าอยู่ ซึ่งประกายฟ้าที่เกิดขึ้นสามารถทำลายสิ่งที่มันผ่าได้มากมาย อีกทั้งมันยังสามารถผ่าคนได้ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่ คนที่ถูกผ่านั้นเสียชีวิต
