Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (DNHDD) is a union territory in western India.[4][5] The population of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is 585,764 (2011 census), and the union territory covers an area of 603 sq km. It was created through the merger of the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The Government of India announced plans to merge the territories in July 2019. The necessary law was passed in the Parliament of India in December 2019, and the territories merged on 26 January 2020.[6][7]

The territory is made up of four separate geographical areas: Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman and the island of Diu. The capital is the city of Daman.[2]

Dadra and Nagar Haveli was occupied by the Portuguese in June, 1783. Residents of Dadra and Nagar Haveli got themselves liberated from Portuguese rule on August 2, 1954. From, 1954 to 1961, the territory was administered by a citizen’s council called the Varishta Panchayat of Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli. In 1961, it was merged with the Republic of India and made a Union Territory.[8]
