वैशाली, वेसाली या वैसाली वर्तमान बिहार, भारतको एउटा पुरातात्विक स्थल हो। यो तिरहुत प्रमण्डलको एक भाग हो।[१]
यो वज्जी महाजनपदको वज्जिका सङ्घको राजधानी सहर थियो, जसलाई ईपूर्व छैटौँ शताब्दीतिर गणतन्त्रको पहिलो उदाहरण मानिन्छ। ईपूर्व ४८३ मा गौतम बुद्धले आफ्नो मृत्यु अघि आफ्नो अन्तिम उपदेश प्रचार गरेका थिए, त्यसपछि ईपूर्व ३८३ मा राजा कालसोकद्वारा यहाँ दोस्रो बौद्ध परिषद्को बैठक बोलाइएको थियो, जसले गर्दा यो जैन र बौद्ध दुवै धर्ममा एक महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान बनेको थियो। यसमा अशोकका स्तम्भहरूमध्ये सबैभन्दा राम्रो संरक्षित स्तम्भहरू मध्ये एक छ, जसको शीर्षमा एक मात्र एसियाली सिंह छ।[२]
वैशालीमा स्तूपको सम्भवतः सबैभन्दा पुरानो ज्ञात उदाहरण, बुद्ध अवशेष स्तूप पनि छ जुन बुद्धको खरानी भएको भनिएको छ।
इतिहास
[सम्पादन गर्नुहोस्]बौद्ध धर्म र जैन धर्मको आगमन हुनुभन्दा पहिले पनि वैशाली गणतान्त्रिक लिच्छवी राज्यको राजधानी थियो। त्यस कालमा, वैशाली एक प्राचीन महानगर र वैशाली राज्यको गणतन्त्रको राजधानी सहर थियो, जसले भारतको वर्तमान बिहार राज्यको अधिकांश हिमालय गङ्गा क्षेत्र ओगटेको थियो। तथापि, वैशालीको प्रारम्भिक इतिहासको बारेमा धेरै कम जानकारी छ। विष्णु पुराणमा वैशालीका ३४ राजाहरूको अभिलेख छ, जसमध्ये पहिलो नभागा थिए, जसले मानव अधिकारको विषयमा आफ्नो सिंहासन त्यागेको विश्वास गरिन्छ।
वैशाली आम्रपालीको भूमिको रूपमा पनि प्रसिद्ध छ, महान भारतीय दरबारी, जो धेरै लोककथाहरूमा साथै बौद्ध साहित्यमा पनि देखा पर्दछ। आम्रपाली बुद्धकी शिष्य बनिन्। मनुदेव महासङ्घको प्रतिष्ठित लिच्छवी कुलका एक प्रसिद्ध राजा थिए, जसले वैशालीमा आम्रपालीको नृत्य प्रदर्शन देखेपछि उनको अधिकार प्राप्त गर्न चाहन्थे।[३]
