ഇന്ത്യൻ സംസ്ഥാനമായ ബിഹാറിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമാണ് പട്ന ഉച്ചാരണം^ⓘ (ഹിന്ദി: पटना) തുടർച്ചയായി ജനവാസം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ലോകത്തിലേയ്ക്കും തന്നെ പുരാതനമായ നഗരങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് പട്ന.

ആധുനിക പട്ന നഗരം ഗംഗയുടെ തെക്കേ കരയിലാണ്. ഇവിടെ ഘാഗ്ര, സോൻ, ഗൻഡക് എന്നീ നദികൾ ചേർന്ന് ഗംഗ പട്നയുടെ വശത്തുകൂടി ഒഴുകുന്നു. നഗരത്തിനടുത്ത് ഗംഗ കണ്ണെത്താത്ത വീതിയിൽ വിശാലമാണ്.

ഏകദേശം 1,800,000 ജനങ്ങൾ വസിക്കുന്ന പട്ന നഗരം ഏകദേശം 25 കിലോമീറ്റർ നീളവും 9 മുതൽ 10 വരെ കിലോമീറ്റർ വീതിയും ഉള്ളതാണ്.

ബുദ്ധമത, ജൈന തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളായ വൈശാലി, രാജ്ഗിർ (രാജ്ഗ്രിഹ), നളന്ദ, ബോധ്ഗയ, പവപുരി, എന്നിവ പട്നയ്ക്ക് അടുത്താണ്. സിഖ് മത വിശ്വാസികൾക്കും പുണ്യനഗരമാണ് പട്ന. സിഖ് മതത്തിലെ പത്താമത്തെയും അവസാനത്തെയും മനുഷ്യ ഗുരു ആയ ഗുരു ഗോബിന്ദ് സിങ്ങ് പട്നയിലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. മുകളിൽ പറഞ്ഞ എല്ലാ പുണ്യസ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കുമുള്ള പ്രധാന കവാടമാണ് പട്ന. നഗരത്തിനുള്ളിലും ചുറ്റുമായും ഉള്ള സ്മാരകങ്ങൾ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തെയും പ്രൗഢമായ ഭൂതകാലത്തെയും കുറിക്കുന്നു.

സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഭരണകേന്ദ്രവും ചരിത്ര പ്രധാനമായ നഗരവും എന്നതിലുപരി പട്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ കേന്ദ്രവും ആതുരശുശ്രൂഷ കേന്ദ്രവും ആണ്. തദ്ദേശീയർക്കിടയിൽ പട്ന നഗരം എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന മതിലുകെട്ടി തിരിച്ച പ്രദേശം ഒരു പ്രധാന വാണിജ്യകേന്ദ്രമാണ്

പാടലീപുത്രം എന്നായിരുന്നു പട്നയുടെ പഴയകാലനാമം. മഗധയിലെ നന്ദവംശത്തിൽ പെട്ട ബിംബിസാരൻ ആയിരുന്നു വൈശാലി ആക്രമിക്കുന്നതിനായി പാടലീപുത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു കോട്ട പണിതത്. ബിംബിസാരന്റെ പുത്രൻ അജാതശത്രു മഗധയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനം പാടലീപുത്രത്തിലേക്ക് മാറ്റി^[7]. തുടർന്ന് മൗര്യസാമ്രാജ്യകാലത്തും പാടലീപുത്രം അവരുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമായി തുടർന്നു.

ഷേർഷയുടെ കാലത്ത് ഈ നഗരം പുനർനിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ട് പട്ന എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടു.
