മലയാളി എന്ന വാക്കിനർത്ഥം മലയാളം വിക്കി നിഘണ്ടുവിൽ കാണുക

ഇന്ത്യൻ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിന്റെ തെക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറ് കേന്ദ്രമാക്കി മലയാളം മുഖ്യഭാഷയായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ജനവിഭാഗമാണ് മലയാളികൾ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ സംസ്ഥാനമായ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷയാണ് മലയാളം. ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ മലയാളികൾ അധിവസിക്കുന്നതും ഇവിടെത്തന്നെ. കേരള സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനുള്ളിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നതും കേന്ദ്രഭരണ പ്രദേശമായ പുതുച്ചേരിയുടെ ഭാഗവുമായ മയ്യഴി, അറബിക്കടൽ ദ്വീപസമൂഹമായ ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ജനങ്ങളും മലയാളികൾ എന്ന ഗണത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ലോകത്തിന്റെ നാനാഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്കും കുടിയേറിയവരെയും അവരുടെ പിൻ‌തലമുറക്കാരെയും വിശാലാർത്ഥത്തിൽ മലയാളികളായി പരിഗണിക്കുന്നു. നരവംശശാസ്ത്രപ്രകാരം ദ്രാവിഡവംശത്തിന്റെ ഉപവിഭാഗമാണ് മലയാളികൾ.

മല മുതൽ ആഴി വരെ ഭരിക്കുന്നവർ എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിൽ (മലയാഴി) മലയാളി എന്നായി മാറി എന്നും, അവൻ അധിവസിക്കുന്ന ദേശം മലയാളക്കര എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന് ഒരു വശവും

മലയിൽ ഇരുന്നു (ആളി= ഭരിക്കുന്നവൻ) വാഴുന്നവർ മലയാളി എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു എന്നും ഒരു ഭാഷ്യമുണ്ട്

ദേശത്തിന്റെ സ്വഭാവം മാറുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച് ഭാഷയുടെ സ്വഭാവത്തിനു മാറ്റം വരാതെ തന്നെ അതിന്റെ പേരിനു മാറ്റം വരാം. കേരള ഭാഷക്ക് മലയാളം എന്ന പേര്‌ സിദ്ധിച്ചത് അങ്ങനെയാണ്‌. അതായത് സമുദ്ര തീരമായിരുന്ന കേരളക്കര പ്രദേശികമായി വളർന്ന് മലവരെ വ്യാപിച്ചപ്പോൾ മലയും ആളവും ഉൾപ്പെട്ടു. (അളം, ആഴി=സമുദ്രം) തുടർന്ന് ചേരളം ചേരം ആയതു പോലെയും കേരളക്കര കേരളമായതു പോലെയും മലയാളക്കര ലോപിച്ച് മലയാളം എന്നറിപ്പെട്ടു. മലയാളക്കരയുടെ പൊതു ഭാഷ എന്ന നിലയിൽ മലയാളം എന്ന പേരു കൂടി ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അയൽക്കാരായ തമിഴർ മലയാളികൾ എന്ന് സംബോധന ചെയ്യാനും തുടങ്ങി. ^[14]

പ്രവാസി മലയാളികൾക്കിടയിൽ മലയാളിയെ മല്ലൂസ് എന്നും. മലബാറി എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.^[15] ഈ പ്രയോഗം പൊതുവെ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ അല്ല കൈക്കൊള്ളുന്നത്.

മലയാളികളെ പറ്റി 1777കളിൽ കേരളത്തിലെത്തിയ ആസ്റ്റ്രിയക്കാരനായ ബർത്തലോമ്യോയുടെ വിവരണം അവരുടെ നിറത്തെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള വിവരണം നൽകാൻ പര്യാപ്തമാണ്‌.
